Holiday Hints - Keep learning!

Yahoo! It‘s holiday time and the kids are so happy to be finished at school, no homework, assignments, projects and all the school stuff.

What a relief!

They definitely deserve a holiday and for many it is a break from the pressure, anxiety and mental anguish that school days bring. All children need time to just be themselves, with a focus on play and enjoyment. Strangely enough, if this was how learning opportunities are presented at school, learning might not be so hard.

Whether they are spending their holidays at home, in daycare, with friends or family, make play the focus for them and that way learning can continue. Games are an excellent way to continue to develop the skills for literacy. You can check out our Learnersaurus games here. Games around the dinner table can improve self esteem and support ongoing reinforcement of literacy skills.

Literacy skills need repetition to continue to develop, so ensure that there is an element of literacy learning each day. Audio books provide a wonderful opportunity for independence and some ‘time out” when needed. Shopping centres provide endless opportunities to build vocabulary and reading opportunities. Encourage your child to notice when specific words are repeated, like EXIT and names of shops. You can turn this into a game for each shopping trip! Give them the shopping list to help monitor where you need to go. Literacy and numeracy are all around us and you can easily engage with this in so many ways, keeping it incidental and fun.

If your child is on the Learnersaurus program, it is essential to keep the routines going to some degree, even if it is just the sequencing and blue cards routines. Whatever you do don’t stop completely, it needs to be consistent!

All the hard work you have already done needs reinforcement and repetition. Find the fun but keep on learning!
